2023 Tree Upcycling Annual Exhibition Designer — Mani & Yin To echo to the theme of the exhibition "Integration of People and Trees", Mani and Yin incorporate trees as the main element in the design. In fact, they put a lot of thought into the selection of materials, taking environmental protection as the main principle and implementing the original intention of promoting environmental protection and sustainable development. Many different environmentally friendly and recycled materials are used throughout the exhibition area, Yin specially introduced the "Wish Wood" Project Exhibition Area to us. The entire display cabinet is made of about 30 recycled red wine wooden boxes, displaying DIY woodworks made by students from participating schools in the "Wish Wood" project. The imaginative creativity of the two designers turned the red wine wooden box into a display cabinet, which coincides with the creative thinking of primary and secondary school students, making this exhibition area even more unique. In addition to red wine wooden boxes, the pallets commonly used for transportation can be recycled into display boards. Mani said that the most unforgettable thing for her was the design of "Upcycling Youth Woodworking Class" exhibition area, using cardboard stacks to create a display stand for the woodworks, e.g. multi-functional treasure chests, small wooden benches with mortises and tenons, recycled wine box wooden storage boxes, etc, allowing visitors to get up close and personal with these wood works, easier to understand the concept of upcycling. Students of Wood Workshop Class F have completed the tissue boxes made for the sick children at the Ronald McDonald House Charities Kwun Tong Home, donation was completed in December 2023.
Designers of 2023 Tree Upcycling Annual Exhibition — Mani & Yin The 2023 "Tree Upcycling" Annual Exhibition has successfully concluded. The theme of this exhibition is "Integration of People and Trees", a roving exhibition lasting about 8 weeks was held at the Jockey Club – Conservancy Green Gallery and Causeway Bay Times Square. We hoped that visitors can learn more about local trees, upcycling and sustainable development concepts. Exhibition venue decor creates a wooden space full of natural atmosphere which allows visitors to enjoy a moment of relaxation and calmness. Are you curious about the exhibition designer behind it? You may not have guessed that the design of this exhibition was the work of two young students from the Hong Kong Institute of Design, Mani & Yin. Yin expressed that she hopes to echo the theme of the exhibition "Integration of People and Trees" by adding elements related to tree forms, visitors will be reminded of trees as soon as they enter the exhibition, really feel the spark created by the fusion of trees and design craftsmanship. Mani added, "In addition, we have divided the exhibition area into three major exhibition areas: "Local Trees", "Transformation and Regeneration", and "Social Co-Creation", visitors can learn more about the connection between people and trees and what upcycling is, and to convey the message of "turning local trees into social treasures" to the public." Students from Wood Workshop Class C & F created practical multifunctional treasure chest, tenon storage stool and recycled wine box wooden storage box for Hong Kong Lutheran Social Service, and were donated in December 2023.
Tung Chung Catholic School (Secondary Section) received the "Wish Wood" Wood Kit at the beginning of new school year, and organized a DIY recycled wood design workshop for Form 4 students. Students use their creativity and add some thought, turning recycled wooden strips into card holders and give them to teachers along with the heartfelt cards.
