I wonder if you all know what we do every year? Field Trips in rural area? Organize youth wood workshop? Jockey Club "Tree Upcycling" Youth Co-creation Project is organised by HKDI DESIS Lab (Design for Social Innovation and Sustainability), with sponsorship from The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust, a tree upcycling and sustainable development project co-created by youths. It encourages young people to learn about local trees, integrate social innovative design and craftsmanship, regenerate local tree resources, and promote the social concept of "harmony between human and tree". The three-year "Tree Upcycling" project organizes a series of educational and community activities every year, covering three major areas – understanding local trees, transforming and recycling wood and encouraging social co-creation. Wanna learn more about us? Let's take a look at our teaser video.
2023 Tree Upcycling Annual Exhibition Designers — Mani & Yin Mani and Yin have previously shared with us the design concept for this exhibition, what do these two classmates hope to gain from their friends who come to visit the exhibition? Mani: The theme of this exhibition is "Integration of People and Trees". Of course we hope that through this exhibition, visitors can learn more about tree resources and discover more changes in trees, increase awareness of environmental protection, we also hope that everyone can know and pay more attention to Hong Kong’s local carpenters and wood crafts. Yin: I really agree with what Mani said. Through this exhibition and the works on display, for example, upcycled wood products, we hope visitors can learn more through innovative thinking and design, discover the joy of upcycling wood and blending it with traditional wood crafts, discover the new value of local tree resources and gradually integrate environmental protection and sustainable development into your life. In this exhibition, they have been able to perfectly display the theme of "Integration of People and Trees" in front of everyone through their designs, we believe this exhibition is only their budding work, and we are looking forward to their future design works together!

2023 Tree Upcycling Annual Exhibition Designer — Mani & Yin To echo to the theme of the exhibition "Integration of People and Trees", Mani and Yin incorporate trees as the main element in the design. In fact, they put a lot of thought into the selection of materials, taking environmental protection as the main principle and implementing the original intention of promoting environmental protection and sustainable development. Many different environmentally friendly and recycled materials are used throughout the exhibition area, Yin specially introduced the "Wish Wood" Project Exhibition Area to us. The entire display cabinet is made of about 30 recycled red wine wooden boxes, displaying DIY woodworks made by students from participating schools in the "Wish Wood" project. The imaginative creativity of the two designers turned the red wine wooden box into a display cabinet, which coincides with the creative thinking of primary and secondary school students, making this exhibition area even more unique. In addition to red wine wooden boxes, the pallets commonly used for transportation can be recycled into display boards. Mani said that the most unforgettable thing for her was the design of "Upcycling Youth Woodworking Class" exhibition area, using cardboard stacks to create a display stand for the woodworks, e.g. multi-functional treasure chests, small wooden benches with mortises and tenons, recycled wine box wooden storage boxes, etc, allowing visitors to get up close and personal with these wood works, easier to understand the concept of upcycling.
